Let's get it right!
Greetings in the name of our Merciful Saviour!
At times this blog is “personal.” Other times it’s political or social. Still other times it is educational. With few exceptions I do my best to make it Biblically relational to everyday life. In a sentence its: “Addressing contemporary issues from God’s perspective.”
So, hang on, let’s take a ride. The first time God destroyed the earth he did so because of mankind’s sin. The second time God destroys the earth is not a total destruction but a reconstruction. He purges the heavens and the earth with fire and does so because the saints’ behavior urges Him to do so. Pretty cool, eh? Here’s the ride. Stay on board.
2 Peter 3:3-13
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” [sounds like today] 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being … [I recall during the 2016 presidential campaign, some talk show hosts made fun of candidates who believed in Creation and those who would vote for a candidate that believed in Creation.] 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the Day of Judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
10 But the day of the LORD will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. *emphasis mine
LET’S GET OUR THEOLOGY RIGHT! It’s not a sinful world alone that speeds up Christ’s return—it’s been like that since the days of Noah/Lot; it’s the Church living holy and godly lives purified by scoffing and persecution. Too many believers get their theology from novels and Last Days headlines (eg: Left Behind series), but Scripture is clear: The earth belongs to the saint, not the sinner. The “harvesters” (angels) REMOVE the “tares” (sinners) and leave the righteous (Matthew 13:40-43). Jesus is coming back for a Church without spot or wrinkle; it is that Church who will inherit a New Heaven and a New Earth. And the Church said, “Hallelujah!”
