Life is a Paradox!
Life is a paradox. Think about it! When you're a child or teenager you thrive on noise and commotion, but when you get older you enjoy … peace.
We just got home from spending a few days with our grandsons (just the boys last week in Ocean City), and this week it was the entire Sofia-Starr tribe (Noelle, AJ, Eden and Levi) in Lancaster, PA. Amazing! The kids—they could run all day. But it’s not over. The moment we’re back at the Hotel they want to run on the treadmill and then hit the pool. Are you kidding! Then when we’re back at the room they are in a full-fledged pillow fight, playing action games their phones or watching noisy videos on YouTube. From where does all that energy come?
Now, is all of that good for them? Yes and No! The “yes,” they’re kids. The “no," because they need to learn to be still – it’s a discipline that must be taught. If they don’t, they’ll miss out on hearing God’s voice, because God won’t compete with the glamour of everyday life. That’s why He said, “Be still and know that I am God.” (See at the end of this email, after my signature, when God spoke to people He used to accomplish His will on Earth.)
Therefore, we would have our still moments. Not too long, but long enough to have Quiet Time and says prayers. I had to chuckle, it was amazing how the kids prayers were for their sibling to behave. LOL! I couldn’t help but think of the words of Jesus when He said, “Get the log out of your own eye before you try and remove the splinter in your brother’s.”
Although at times the grandkids can be exhausting, the moments are ones they, and we, will cherish into eternity.

For some of us, that (being still) is contrary to our nature—we’re always on the go.
But take careful notice of those who hear from God … and where. In most cases they are where there were no clamoring or competing voices:
- Abraham is alone in his tent
- Jacob is alone sleeping on a stone pillow
- Moses is in the desert (burning bush); Moses is on top of Mt Sinai (Ten Commandments)
- Joseph is alone in a jail cell
- Samuel is alone in his bedchamber (age of twelve) (show photo)
- Manoah’s wife—the first time we don’t know where she was other than alone; the second time she was in the field
- David is in a pasture
- Elisha is plowing in a field
- Mary is alone when Gabriel appears to her
- Zachariah is alone in the Holy Place
- Paul is alone in an Arabian desert when he receives instructions regarding the Lord’s Table
- John the Revelator is alone on the Isle of Patmos (show photo)
- And the list goes on.
- Will you commit TODAY to have a Quiet Time with the LORD, daily?
Even if it’s for 10 minutes—just you and Him away from clamor and commotion of everyday life. It may mean going to bed 10 minutes later, getting up 10 minutes earlier, or shortening your lunch by 10 minutes. But do it! It will be worth it.
